Abstract

Although the young generation in the Middle East has gained a powerful tool—access to the virtual space—that allows them to transcend the traditional boundaries of society, this transition is not without its risks. A qualitative comparative study, based on a systematic review of secondary sources, indicates that the proliferation of technology among the youth in the three selected societies has led to persistent and excessive use of the virtual space. Four major commonalities were identified across the three countries: the rising prevalence of virtual space addiction; a shared sense of euphoric freedom among the youth, who feel liberated from social constraints; the formation of personal and social identities that differ from those in the real world; and the emergence of various physical and psychological health issues stemming from this addiction. Conversely, four key differences were observed among students in these nations: variations in internet infrastructure—ranging from high-speed access in the UAE and Turkey to a more controlled, restricted environment in Iran; disparities in gender-based access, with the UAE offering broad, equitable access, whereas students in Iran and Turkey face significant familial and cultural barriers; a higher incidence of health disorders related to obesity and physical inactivity among students in the UAE; and a more pronounced gap between real-world and virtual identities among users in Turkey and Iran compared to those in the UAE. Based on these findings, it is recommended that secondary school educators—while acknowledging the positive aspects of the virtual space—also inform the younger generation about the adverse physical and psychological consequences associated with its use.
